Unit 43.2 /Secondary Research/News Report, dog attack.

The news report about my brother, who was attacked in January.

Unit 43.2/Secondary Research/Codes and Conventions

In my blog post I will be talking about the different forms of codes and conventions.
There are many different types of genres in radio: documentary, educational, special interest, discussion etc. The radio podcast i will be making will be in the format of a documentary. This is because the subject I have chosen to talk about will best fit the format of a documentary or investigative.
As well as genres, there are also many different types of formats: Narrated, ballad style, present, actuality, biased, music and song linked etc.
The radio podcast i am making will be in the format of a documentary, simply because the subject I have decided to talk about is a serious one and as well as including in depth interviews, I am also sharing s personal story that relates to what I am talking about.
The subject I have chosen to talk about is weather or not dogs should be licensed. My brother was attacked earlier this year which inspired me to create a radio podcast about him and dog attacks that have happened this year. Hopefully i will get a lot of in depth interviews that I can put in my podcast, to eventually create a documentary about it,

Unit 43.2 /Analyising Radio shows/XFM.

XFM.

Xfm was created in London in 1992 by Sammy Jacob, who later co-founded NME Radio in 2008. Xfm plays just one genre of music, which primarily indie pop. Unlike the BBC, Xfm do not have a television license fee so they do broadcast adverts in order to fund the show. Xfm is a brand of two commercial radio stations, one based in Manchester and the other based in London. Xfm London has been broadcasting on 104.9 FM, and has been full time since 1997. Xfm Manchester wasn't launched until the 15th of March 2006. The slogan for Xfm is 'Music that rocks'. The genre of music they play is indie pop but also play rock music too which is why I think the slogan is quite clever. I do like listening to Xfm because of the music they play, even though its just one genre of music, there are so many different song that they play, and its not repetitive like some radio shows are. The average target audience for this radio podcast i would say are the ages between 16 - 35+ because, as well as playing recent music, they play older music from this decade which i know the older people grew up too. Xfm isn't the most popular radio station in the country however i think it is one of the best.

Unit 43.2/Analysing Radio Shows/Talksport

Talksport

Talksport was originally and officially launched as Talk Radio UK on the 14th of February 1995.According to the RAJAR audience figures for Q2/2013, Talk sport's audience is 3.25 million adults in the UK, which is highest achieved since the station launched as Talk Radio in 1995. It is the highest the radio station has achieved since the station launched as Talk Radio in 1995. I think the majority of the viewers will be male, because the radio station is about sport, and only sport. The radio stations i prefer are the ones that play the latest up to date music, which is why i find this radio podcast quite boring, even though the show has so many viewers. The title of he radio station attracts the male listeners, because of the name of it. The title is simple but gets the message to all viewers that they do just 'talk sport'.
The company 'Talksport' don't just present a radio station, they also present sport news in different ways: for example: Talksport TV , Talksport Magazine, Talksport Online  and Talksport LIVE. Talksport focusses the majority of its live sports coverage on football, Premier League,Football League,League Cup,FA Cup,England friendly internationalsCommunity Shield,UEFA Champions League,UEFA Europa League,FIFA World Cup,UEFA European Football Championship, Aviva Premiership,Rugby World Cup,Cheltenham Festival and The Derby.

Unit 43.2/Analysing radio show/BBC Radio 4

BBC Radio 4

Radio 4 is a very political radio podcast, this radio show is very well structured and formal, the interviewees and presenters use academic language. When I listened to this radio show, the subjects they talked about were politics and social capital. Obviously, Radio 4 was created for an older audience and in my opinion would attract the middle class audience or even the upper middle class. I don't think any young people would listen to this radio station as I think its really boring, however someone at the age 40-50 will have a different opinion because the radio station is targeted at them. I don't think i will ever listen to BBC Radio 4 because i find it very boring, I would say the average target audience will be the ages of 35-60 year olds.

Unit 43.2/Analysing Radio Shows/BBC Radio 2.

BBC Radio 2

BBC Radio 2 is one of the BBC's national radio stations that first aired on the 30th September 1967, (the same date BBC Radio 1 first aired) and is the most popular station in the United Kingdom. It ranks 1st many different regions. 82% of the listeners are over the age of 35, although in in the recent years, day time playlists attracted more younger listeners This is because Radio 2  features music from this decade, also including albums and indie music. Weekday evening features include
different types of music: blues, country and western, classic rock and also documentaries, and biographies which would attracts the older audience,
All BBC radio stations that broadcast to the UK audiences are funded by the television licence fee, this means that all radio BBC radio stations do not broadcast advertisements.
Radio 2 is now termed "the nation's favourite", The motto that was originally used for BBC Radio 1. As BBC Radio 2 is now the most listened to station in the UK.
BBC Radio 2 wouldn't be my first choice if I had to pick a favourite, however it does present features that I enjoy listening too. I like to listen to different genres of music, indie being one of my favourite, but I prefer radio shows like BBC Radio 1 which is more suited to my age group.

Unit 43.2/Secondary Research/Analysing Radio Shows, Radio 5 LIVE.

Analysing radio shows

Radio 5 LIVE

Radio 5 Live was launched in March 1994 as a repositioning of the original Radio 5, which was launched on 27 August 1990. This is different to the radio stations i usually listen too. Usually I listen to radio shows that specialise in playing the latest, and most popular music. Whereas, Radio 5 is the BBC's national radio service that only specialises in live BBC News, phone-ins, interviews and sports commentaries.
This radio show broadcasts an extremely wide range of sports and covers all the major sporting events. For example, some of the sports they talk about are: Olympic games, the World cup, rugby, golf etc..
The station now broadcasts from MediaCityUK in Salford, where a lot of radio stations and advertisements are produced.
There are three different types of presenters on BBC Radio 5 Live and they are all specialised in one subject that they talk about on air, there are news presenters, sport readers and travel readers.
They all have there own shows on Radio 5 live, for example a sports reader will be presenting the 'sports report', or '5 Live sport', etc. As for a news reader or travel reader, they will present shows about the latest news on what is going on right now, for example they will present 'morning reports' or '5 Live breakfast' .
In my opinion, I don't find this radio station very interesting, but only because it doesn't fit my age
group and I find sport news quite boring. I prefer radio stations like radio 1, as it includes the latest new tracks and i prefer to listen to music rather than to interviews or sport. However I think the target audience for this would be between the ages of 18-40 year olds, because some young people (mainly men) would listen to check on the sport news.

Unit 43.2 /Analysing radio shoes/'BBC Radio 1'

Analysing radio shows

BBC Radio 1

BBC Radio 1 first aired on the 30th September 1967, (the same date BBC radio 2 first aired).
BBC radio 1 is a radio show that plays the latest popular music, it provides different genres after 7:00 pm, including electronic dance, hip hop, rock or interviews with different artists. The target audience is between the ages 15 and 29. There are two different types of DJ's, day and night DJ's. 'Day' DJs play music generally orientated around the Radio 1 Playlist , 'Night' DJs play more eclectic and specialised 'New Music'.
BBC 1 Radio breakfast is presented by someone called Nick Grimshaw, for the hours of 6:30 in the morning till 10:00am on weekdays. In my opinion I think this would be the most popular show to listen to as a lot of people will be in their car on their way to work at this time and the majority of people only listen to radio when they g in their car, and because it is one of the most busiest times of the day. BBC radio 1 Breakfast consists of traffic news, popular music and  other Features including Call or Delete – a game carried on from his previous show on Radio 1, featuring celebrity guests choosing to either call a random contact on their phone or delete their number altogether. Other features include Wheel of 4 TunesShowquizness,  occasionally featuring a rude robot known as the Showbot, and The Nixtape – a full hour of older songs, mostly from the 2000s, on Friday mornings.
There are lots of presenters on BBC radio 1, and they all come on at different times, for example straight after Nick Grimshaw, Fearne Cotton presents from 10:00am till 13:00pm in the afternoon. However i think the most popular would be the bbd radio 1 breakfast show, and also around the time 17:00pm , as 'rush hour' hits and lots of people will be listening to radio 1 with Greg James. As again it it one of the most busiest times of the day.

Unit 43.2/My Proposal

My Proposal

My idea for the radio factual i will be making is about whether or not every dog owner in the country should have a licence, or whether dog owners should be checked over by police, to make sure they are being brought up correctly and decide if its safe for them to own a dog. The reason why I have chosen to create my podcast on this is because around the end of December 2013, my brother was attacked by a pit bull, he was affected massively and I feel creating a radio podcast about the topic is relevant.
He was in hospital for 6 days and needed 3 operations including plastic surgery on his right leg. After leaving the hospital, it left huge issues at home that my mum had to deal with; problems involved, my mum finding another job, due to the fact that she had to leave her other job to look after my younger brother, and I had to stay away for a while as my mum couldn't take care for us both.
As much as an effect the attack had on Louis, it also caused many problems in the family, and is one of the reasons why I am creating radio factual on this subject. I think it is important to get the message across to other people. I also feel that by talking about a personal story like this one, it might get the message across to people that a dog attack could happen to anyone, as well as this I think it will be easier to talk about as i was involved in the situation. Another reason why I am doing this is because dog attacks are creating a massive moral panic at the moment, more and more children are getting attacked or seriously injured, even more than last year and the year before.
Not only do young people get attacked but people of an older age are also being targeted. In the future, i feel that if every dog was licensed less people would be attacked, even though not all dog attacks can be stopped, I think that by licensing will reduce it massively. Which is a reason why i am i have chosen to create a radio podcast on this subject idea.

The genre of my radio podcast will be in the format of a documentary. I have decided to this because
The subject i have chosen to talk about is a serious subject, and the idea was inspired by my brother that attacked earlier this year, which is a personal story which as well interviews would best fit the format of a documentary.

Unit 43.2/Primary Research/My brothers attack

This is the boy I interviewed for my radio podcast, also my brother. Both his legs and his arms were bitten and also his face. He was in hospital for 6 days and needed 3 operations including plastic surgery on his right leg. Louis was very lucky to survive as to get away from the dog that attacked him, he had to climb on top of a car but the dog didn't stop as it dragged him down. It had a massive effect on him as it took him 8 months to finally start getting back on his feet.

The dog that attacked him was a pit bull and was a family dog that lived around the corner from my house. It also had an affect on the family as well as Louis him self. My mum almost lost her job due to the amount of time she had to take off work and look after Louis. This meant I had to stay away for a week as my mum couldn't take care of us or afford to feed the family.
As much as an effect the attack had on Louis, it also caused many problems in the family, which is why I feel a new law should be put in to license all dogs.

Unit 43.2/Moral Panic/Secondary Research

Moral Panic

Moral panic in the media industry is when an event happens so suddenly that can upset the public.
Dog attacks are huge in the news right now and have been for the past year. dog attacks are a massive moral panic and people are protesting for new law to come in. Its not just stray dogs that attack children and young people, more family dogs are getting or already more dangerous than before.
'Each year, approximately 28,000 facial dog bites are reported in the UK, with just over 19,000 of them requiring plastic surgery.'
The quote itself shows how serious every incident is and how so many  people are protesting for every dog in UK to be licensed. A lot of dog attacks happen every year and my argument is that i think every dog should have a license; in my opinion i think less children will get attacked because all dogs would have been checked over by police to make sure there safe. Unfortunately, not every child in the country will be able to prevent being attacked by a dog, however i believe licensing dogs will help reduce it.

Unit 43.2/Permanent Present

Permanent Present

Permanent Present is the current events that are happening today. For example, people would talk about any issues they have on: talk shows, radio shows like Radio 5 live, news channels and chat shows like daybreak, this morning and loose women. On chat shows, people are interviewed talking about the issues that they are facing at that time. Radio 5 Live, holds many debatable arguments and can sometimes be interesting to listen to but in my opinion i find it quite boring. I prefer to listen to radio shows that mainly play music.

Unit 43.2/Secondary Research/Statistics

Unit 43.2/Hegemony

Hegemony

Hegemony is an idea of rule by consent, which means the most important people almost tell people what to like. For example, reality shows or competitive shows like Geordie Shore or X factor, set an image that young people would follow. Simon Cowell is the main guy in the making of the X factor, a lot of named shops copy the styles of these shows and celebrities that appear on screen. The top people would create a style for shops like Topshop, River Island, New Look etc. This is a way of making money for big companies that Simon Cowell produces.

James Watson 1998. "In its simplest sense, hegemony means 'control over'; yet in referring to 'hegemonic control' we are not repeating the same thing using another phrase, but describing a special form of control."

Unit 43.2/Counter Culture

Counter Culture

Counter Culture is someone who is involved in a group, and break the rules or be a bit rebellious because they disagree or do not follow the rules set by their parents or guardian. Different social groups  are given names from how they dress and act. For example, the different social groups you could come across are, 'chavs', 'punks', and many more different groups. 'Chavs' are known for dressing scruffily. For boys its usually tracksuits and trainers and wander the streets as if they are bigger than anyone else, for girls it could be the same. 'Chavs' usually live on council estates with their families and sometimes cannot help what they are but often come from uncaring, out of work parents.
However, you could the odd person who just wants to fit in, and dresses the same as what 'chavs' do so they don't feel out of place. A lot of people in social groups are stereotyped for what they are named after which what counter culture is.

Unit 43.2/Moral Panic

Moral Panic

Moral panic in the media industry is when an event happens so suddenly that can upset the public. Miley Cyrus is a good example of moral panic in the media industry at the moment, this is because as a kid, Miley Cyrus grew up in Disney as fictional character called 'Hanna Montana'. From being an innocent Disney star to making music videos in which she is hardly dressed, creates a moral panic for everyone. Parents are the ones who are mainly concerned with 'the new Miley Cyrus', this because their children will be watching her on the TV and copy her dress sense or how she acts. Britney Spears at the time her first video came out would have created a moral panic. However, she doesn't reveal as much as Miley Cyrus does. Both videos are 'coming of age videos', basically doing what teenagers are doing or want to do, so this would defiantly create a moral panic for most parents.

Unit 43.2/Radio Podcast Research

Radio Podcast

Welcome to my radio and factual podcast.
In my radio factual i will produce a short 10 minute factual about dog owners being allowed to own dogs, whether or not every dog owner should have a licence, or whether homes should be checked by police in order for them to have a dog in their homes. Dog attacks happen quite often and it is usually young children who are attacked, which is why i am doing my radio podcast about if family's should be allowed to have a dog as a pet in their home. I will interview a young boy who were attacked by a dog earlier this year and ask what he feels about dogs being allowed in homes, also i will interview dog owners and hopefully interview a man called Pete, a publisher for the 'Manchester Evening News' about the story and what he thinks about dogs being allowed to be kept as pets in family homes, and the statistics of how many dog attacks happen yearly.
Hopefully my radio podcast will consist of statistics, interviews from a range of different people such as: dog owners, the young boy which was attacked, families with no pets and opinions of members of the public about dogs being allowed in homes.

In my podcast i will use a range of primary and secondary research including interviews, using the internet to find contacts or other information. I will try my best to interview journalists and members of the public to get as much information i can get for my radio podcast.

The publisher of the Manchester evening news newspaper has agreed to have an interview, and this has already been arranged.

Unit 43.2/Interpreting my results

I asked the public ‘Do you think the majority of dog attacks happen due to how the dog has been brought up? ’Eleven out of fifteen of them think that dogs should be licensed to help stop a lot of dog attacks from happening. However the ones that said they shouldn’t have a license had no evidence to support why they thought that.
Another question i asked the public was public was 'what do you think needs to happen to bring the risk of a dog attack from happening?'
The majority of the people I asked said that all dogs should be licensed. The results I got I were really happy with, this was because some of the answers I got were things like, ‘they should be muzzled’ or ‘they should be trained correctly’. I got in depth answers and the majority of them were ways of reducing dogs attacking young children, which i was pleased with as hardly anyone just said yes or no.
In conclusion, from the results I got from the whole questionnaire, I am really happy with the results I got. I feel some of the people I asked had no idea what they were talking about and answered the questions based on a guess. Overall, the final question I asked the public was ‘To avoid the risk of young children being attacked, do you think that all dogs should be licensed? I asked a total of 15 people, and 11 of them said yes and gave a reason why. The other 4 people that said no had no evidence to support it, so to me this shows that didn't really know much about the subject, couldn't be bothered with the questionnaire or didn't really understand the question.
